Western Kangaroo Island Campgrounds

Project Overview

Concept designs are being created to rebuild 8 campgrounds that were destroyed by bushfires in the summer of 2019/20.

These designs are now available to view for campgrounds at Snake Lagoon, Harvey's Return and West Bay which provide an overview of the facilities which that will be returned to these sites.

Building works will now progress through relevant development approvals before construction commences in 2022.

Key highlights at each campground include:

Snake Lagoon

  • A newly designed CTO pick up location with seating and shelter.
  • A new picnic setting and shelter.
  • Architectural screening of Kangaroo Island Wildness Trail facilities to improve visual amenity for all visitors.

West Bay

  • Improvement to existing campsite to cater for group camping.
  • A new picnic setting and shelter.
  • Upgraded toilet amenities (re-using existing infrastructure).
  • Upgraded entry signage to campground.
  • Access road re-surfacing.

Harvey’s Return

  • Existing number of campsites will be maintained and formalise with natural materials such as salvaged logs, boulders etc.
  • New toilet facilities will be installed.
  • Picnic setting to be upgraded with new furniture and shelter.
  • New campground wayfinding map and trail head signage will be installed.
